How do brakes work? The typical system consists of disc brakes in the front and either discs or drum brakes in the rear. They are connected by a system of tubes and hoses that link them at each wheel to the master cylinder. When you step on the brake pedal, you are actually pushing against a plunger in the master cylinder, forcing the hydraulic oil (brake fluid) through a series of tubes and hoses to the braking unit at each wheel.

As part of a brake repair, have the fluid checked to make sure it is pure with no air bubbles. Braking efficiency can be severely reduced if air compresses in the lines. If air is suspected, then the system must be bled to remove it. This is an important brake repair that is required if such a condition exists.

With disc brakes, the fluid from the master cylinder is forced into a caliper where it presses against a piston. In turn, the piston squeezes two pads against the disc (rotor) which is attached to the wheel, forcing it to slow down or stop. With drum brakes, the fluid is forced into the wheel cylinder, pushing the shoes out so that the friction linings are pressed against the drum, which is attached to the wheel, causing the wheel to stop. In either case, the friction of the pads on a disc system, or the shoes on a drum system, convert the forward motion of the vehicle into heat. This heat causes the linings of the pads and shoes to wear out and will eventually require a brake replacement.
