1. Engine Oil Light

An illuminated “Engine Oil Light” is caused by one of two things; low oil pressure or low oil level. This pressure and level is critical to the proper operation of any motor. When the engine looses oil at a rapid pace the pressure decreases, and there will be a rapid buildup of heat in the engine. When this light comes on, you should immediately pull-over to the side of the road, shut off the engine, turn on your emergency flashers and check the oil level. If the level seems to be okay, there is probably another type of problem. To be on the safe side, have your vehicle towed to a repair shop to see what type of vehicle maintenance will be necessary. However, if the oil level is low, go ahead and top it off before driving further. Then, you would be wise to get to an auto repair shop and have it checked for oil leaks. One early indicator of low oil pressure is engine noise, eventually leading to engine failure.

2. Engine Temperature Light

An illuminated Engine Temperature Light (or a gauge) indicates the cooling system is operating outside its normal range. When this light comes, pull over to the side of the road immediately, turn on the emergency flashers, and allow the motor to cool down. There is no fast or safe way to check or add coolant if the level is too low and overheating when the engine is hot. It is probably best to call a tow truck and have a professional do a complete evaluation of the cooling system. This will let you know what type of vehicle maintenance needs to be done, either right then, or what can wait until you are back in your hometown.
